ULTIMA'S
WINGS
![]() The wings were the hardest thing to work with due to the size of them. The most difficult task was finding space in a one bedroom apartment to work on them. First, I started off cutting out the shape of the wings from large rolls of felt. I prefer felt for the base of wings since hot glue sticks nicely to that fabric. Then, I bent 12 gauge fence wire into the shape of each wing, creating a wireframe structure. Each felt piece was then hot glued to the corresponding wireframe. The 6 wings were then jointed to a middle contraption, which consists of pvc pipes. The 6 wings were JB welded and expedites so they would not break or slide out of place.
![]() I wanted to make sure before I applied feathers to the wings, I didn’t want the white felt to show through. I took orange and yellow Rit dye and put in spray bottles. I sprayed the felt with the dyes and created a gradient. The middle base was then spray-painted orange. The feathers were an easier task, but it was a long process since there were so many of them. I glued 1000 Orange turkey quill feathers, 600 Yellow turkey quill feathers and 22 orange bags of maribou feathers. After the gluing, I used an orange transparent spray paint to create a gradient between the two colors.
![]() The wings attach to a plexi backplate, which is placed inside my corset. A flagpole holder is screwed into the plexi plate. When attaching the wings, you just have to slide the pipe on the wings into the flag pole holder. The wings ended up being 6 feet a piece; 14 foot wingspan (12 foot for the wings and a 2 foot interval.)
