ULTIMA'S HELMET & BRACERS

The helmet was the another difficult task to complete.  I first started off with the Wonderflex material, drawing out the shapes of the earpieces and the helmet height on the Wonderflex sheet.  After cutting the pieces out and heating it in the oven, I bent the pieces into shape.  At times I got burned, since I had to shape it to my head.

After the Wonderflex, I carved out the top of the helmet, the horns and part of the earpiece with Styrofoam.  I hot glued the pieces to the Wonderflex base, then adding a layer of dry wall spackle to the whole helmet.  After the spackle was dry, I would then sand the whole helmet.  This process took about 4 rounds of spackling.  After the spackle was sanded to my liking, I applied paint primer.

When I was ready to paint the helmet, I masked off the horns with masking tape and plastic bags.  After the paint was dry, I moved the the helmet base - masking off the horns.  I ran into trouble with the masking tape pulling off the layer of paint; so I would have to spray the section all over again.

I decorated the helmet with various craft ribbon and jewels once the paint was dry.  I also made two little wings, using a small wirestructure and some felt as the base.  I used hackle, duck feathers and turkey quill feathers to complete the wings.  I drilled a hole in the sides of the helmet, pulling the extra wire from the bottoms of the wings through, then gluing the wires from the insides.

The bracers were made up of a flexible foam base (so the inside wouldn’t scratch me) and then I used plaster strips over the foam.  I carved out small cylinders from Styrofoam and glued it to the bracers, then layering the whole bracers with dry wall spackle.  I sanded it, then repeated the process 3 times.  I spraypainted them, then melted vinyl rope together to be at the top and bottom of the bracers.  These were painted as well.  I also took an acrylic blue marker and inked circuitry designs on the circles.  The bracers were then decorated with craft jewels and ribbon.
